Fit Clinic: Full Hips and Thighs

If your problem areas are your full hips and thighs, here are some tips to flatter your shape:
Pick A-line dresses! Look for 1950’s inspired pieces with a fit and flare style, like this 1950s Light Blue & White Lace Shirt Waist Dress. Shift dresses with wide necklines will also compliment a troublesome lower half. Like the previous two problem areas, wrap dresses will also flatter women with full hips and thighs by drawing away attention from these areas.
For the most flattering skirts, stick with structured A-line styles and straight skirts, such as this vintage Emilio Pucci A-line skirt. Trumpet shapes and inverted-pleat skirts also compliment this type of figure by focusing on the waist while drawing the eyes outward.
Pick straight leg or boot cut pants. Also look for pants with contoured waistbands, which are higher in the back than in the front. The contoured waistband will hug the waist and reduce gaping, a common issue for women with hourglass figures.
Look for tops that draw the eye upward, minimizing the focus on your problem areas. Similar to the previously mentioned dresses and skirts, the A-line style will also be flattering for tops. A chic A-line coat, like this Vintage Gallant Cashmere Coat, will draw attention away from your hips and thighs. To accentuate the waist, pick tops that stop at the hip and cropped jackets. To focus the eyes upward, pick tops with strong shoulder lines and boatneck tops.
What to avoid if your full hips and thighs are your problem areas: Anything that negatively accentuates these areas. Avoid covering up these areas with long tops but also avoid too much emphasis with side-slit or front patch pockets. Stay away from pencil skirts, skinny jeans, and flared pants, which draw too much attention to full hips and thighs.
