Oscar De La Renta was an iconic Dominican American fashion designer. He passed away this Monday at the age of 82. Trained by Balenciaga, De La Renta became an international fashion icon during the 1960s. The 1960s and 70s were a critical time in defining American fashion. De La Renta was a key influencer in molding American fashion and differentiating it from European fashion.

He was known for dressing celebrities, stateswomen and fashionistas of all kinds. He first made a name for himself by dressing Jacqueline Kennedy.

His most recent creation was Amal Alamuddin’s wedding dress. By dressing the ladies of Hollywood and the White House, De La Renta became a household name. His specialty was evening wear, so naturally, his designs shined on the red carpet.

De La Renta’s signature style included rich colors, intricate embroideries, and full skirts. He was able to fuse modern design with femininity. In addition to his couture creations, De La Renta was a patron of the arts, serving on the board of the Metropolitan Museum and Carnegie Hall.
