For women in the 18th century, the hat was an icon of wealth. The begere, or ‘Shepherdess Hat’, was wide-brimmed and made of straw. Serving as a stylish shade to protect the fair skin, the hat was inspired by the countryside and could be embellished with various accoutrements to more directly convey one’s pecuniary prestige.
Extravagant hats were made popular in the 1980s by Princess Diana and have since made a come back. Kate Middleton is always wearing a beautiful hat, Lady Gaga is always trying to push the limit, and then there are the hats that people use to try and go incognito.
Hats have changed over the years, and they will continue to change, however, that does not mean the vintage hats are going out of style. BackInStyle.com has some great hats that would be perfect to protect you from the summer sun.
